In short, because it’s the best way for you to ensure your site is profitable

For the uninitiated, the concept of search engine optimization (or SEO) can be an alien and slightly baffling one to grasp. It’s easy to take for granted that for every search term we punch into Google, Bing or Yahoo, there are only 10 or so results for the first page and some billions of contending pages.

Whatever sector you’re seeking to have a website developed for, it’s no secret that there will be hundreds or thousands of competitors companies vying for those limited few spots on the front of the search engine results pages (SERPs). Achieving those winning results requires SEO and taking this into consideration fulfils the title of the article in a nutshell.

However, if you or anyone you know is considering having a website developed, it’s well worth understanding the full ramifications of this, especially considering first page sites get over 98% of the visits from these potential customers.

How Do Search Engines Work Anyway?

Search engines work by indexing (i.e reviewing and storing data locally for immediate reference) all relevant information on the Internet and keep it in data centers. Each search engine has a computer algorithm to reference all indexed info in the data centers for relevant web pages every time a user types in a search phrase (or keyword).

These search algorithms are extremely complicated mathematical equations which are often written by some of the most talented computer scientists and programmers in the world. Every time somebody searches for something, this algorithm is invoked to make sure the results which hit the first page are the best, most useful and most relevant to the user. Thus, search engines ensure that their services keep clients coming back.

What Does This Mean for My Company Website?

There’s an almost alarming number of web design companies out there who do not also handle the SEO for their client’s newly developed websites. The fact that there are any at all is shocking and it’s a painfully common mistake made by business owners to hire a series of talented digital artists to create a beautiful, elegant and intuitive website which has absolutely no SEO executed whatsoever. This is why you need a web design and SEO company.

This means the difference between appearing on the front page of the search engines or not. Ultimately, it means the difference between business success and receiving absolutely no traffic, no new clients and making no money. It’s genuinely like buying the body of a beautiful new Ferrari sports car which has no engine and no wheels, except instead of a car it’s your entire livelihood on the line.

What Search Engine Optimization Will Noam Design do for My Site?

Because it would not be an overstatement to say that building websites means clients are putting their entire lives in your hands, every step of our design process is approached with search engine optimization in mind. While search engines such as Google possess phenomenally complex algorithms to search the entire Internet instantaneously, we have put together algorithms of our own to constantly cross reference the code and to check for optimization.

We track a total of 117 different algorithms to ensure your website is constantly run through its paces to ensure search engine performance. Furthermore, once the website is live, we go through a reiteration process to further bolster all the good work done in the foundations to ensure your website continues to improve in that performance. Some web design companies may think it’s acceptable not to take these things into consideration, but we go all out to make sure your site will perform as well as it looks.

What 2013 Web Design Trends Mean to Your Business

It’s always interesting for web developers to thrash out the latest tech trends and the New Year regularly marks industry buzz and future predictions. There are many articles out there but few, if any, discuss these matters in a way which explains what they mean to the business owner. The turn of this particular New Year coincided with new technologies and techniques spawning from the release of HTML5, CSS3 and other important updates.

While these may seem like arbitrary acronyms to the uninitiated, they represent genuinely revolutionary leaps in web development tech which you’ll notice by an increasing number of exceptionally gorgeous and dynamic websites. It is in no way an overstatement to say that we’re entering a new era in web design, so let’s take a look at design trends for 2013.

1. Responsive Design

Trendy buzzwords are bandied around merrily by just about every design blog going and this is one of them. Responsive design simply means your website will alter its format and layout depending on what kind of device your customer uses to connect browse it. Your single website address (URL) ‘responds’ to people connecting on a smartphone, tablet device or desktop PC and they’ll receive the appropriate resolution, layout and consequent user experience.

This method is also backed as a recommended guideline by Google which means it’s the best approach for your search engine optimization (SEO). In the US, a staggering 25% of people online only use mobile devices for web browsing. With 1.2 billion smartphones in circulation and exponential increases predicted, responsive design is undoubtedly a smart move to connect with your target audience effectively.

2. Natural Design Elements and the CSS3 Update

Cascading Style Sheets (or CSS) is a language used to express layout and presentation within webpages, with the number ‘3’ denoting the latest version. In times past, the CSS standard was less refined and considerably more time-consuming for developers. Discussions of ‘natural design elements’ and other CSS3 updates essentially mean development companies will achieve more beautiful work in less time, at less cost to clients.

Quality-to-cost ratio for exceptional web design work is becoming increasingly favorable. Developers can now import typography or animations quicker and easier without relying on Flash which can be cumbersome and slow a website down and sometimes hurt SEO. In addition, applying rendering effects such as box shadows, rounded corners and background gradients can all be done with minimal effort.

3. Parallax Scrolling

The sheer fact that parallax scrolling is so incredibly awesome makes it well worth worth a mention. When scrolling down with a mouse wheel (or other scrolling method) a user can now manipulate objects on both the X and Y axes, making for an extremely immersive 3D-like experience. Coupled with up-to-date and elegant design, the development potential to capture your audience’s attention is exceptional. Great examples can be seen here or here.

In addition to creating addictive and dynamic design, parallax scrolling offers extensive opportunities to display three-dimensional interactive images of various products for sale. People buy with their eyes on the Internet and while pictures have done the trick in the past, parallax scrolling represents the future in online retail display.

4. Whitespace, Minimalism, Big Photos and Oversized Buttons

White-space simply refers to large amounts of “unused” space on any given website capitalized upon to draw deeper focus and attention to relevant focal points. This ties in with the concept of minimalism and is further compounded by the popularization of touch screens requiring large, bold buttons to reduce fiddliness and fumbling around. The final cornerstone in this foundation of refined and elegant simplicity will be oversized photographs.

Quality photography is following a similar trend towards uncomplicated, bold and beautifully-shot images which fit in wonderfully with this shift in design preference towards simplicity. Essentially, as a business owner, it means delivering a more intuitive, modern, impressive, captivating, relaxing and engaging experience for your website visitors and potential clients.

5. A Shift in Branding

This final point coincides with the above and changes such as these will have a knock-on effect on branding. In a sense, during 2013 and onwards, we’ll see an entire website coming together to form the brand of a company. Gone will be the days of overly busy web pages with a discreet logo tucked away in the top left corner. The future holds a new era in online company presentation and branding will be swept up, refined and incorporated in such a way so as to more deeply connect and identify with your target audience.

Whether you’re a budding entrepreneur in the throes of going it alone or you’re an established business looking to update your web presence, it’s almost impossible to overstate the importance of making a great impact with your website.

Naturally, you want to know how to find a good web design company and, being in the business, we know there are several key points to take into consideration.

You’ve already taken the first step which is to begin your research and reading this article should put you in good stead to continue on the same vein.

The Importance of Research

The Internet has become something of a double-edge sword. On the one side, if either an individual or company makes a mistake, it can be extremely difficult to cover up any traces of error, leaving us all open to constant scrutiny and potential criticism. On the other hand however, and in a point which has proven particularly valuable to consumers, companies who act in ethical, diligent and talented fashions leave behind a treasure trail of positivity for potential clients to follow.

Due to the nature of the web development business, there’s always a great deal of evidence online of the best companies. Consequently, searching for previous clients, checking their search engine optimization, rankings and social footprints can all provide a wider picture of the kind of website development company you’re hiring. So, don your Columbo-style beige coat, magnifying glass and Sherlock Holmes smoking pipe and investigate these areas to gain a solid idea of the considered company.

What Kind of Website Does the Development Company Have?

Another telling aspect about a web development team is the website they’ve created for themselves. It’s surprising how often you browse around at design companies only to find they own thoroughly lacklustre sites. Remember that any self-respecting and gifted web development team will have put together a lovely showcase example of their work. Simply move on if the website is anything less.

The Importance of Testimonials

Finally, and also most importantly, comes the point of testimonials. Testimonials glowing like the North Star which are provably written by previous clients are by far the strongest possible way to ensure the time and money you invest in the people putting together your dreams one web page at a time will be the right team. Web development is a highly personal and involved process and it strikes a difficult balance between creativity and technical capability. Always check for testimonials of any company you’re considering.

If you’ve found this article using the search engines looking for pre-purchase research on hosting services for WordPress sites, you’ve earned a solid pat on the back.

The reason for this is that WordPress hosting represents one of the most aggressively competitive markets on the Internet and, as such, it’s bestowed with an abundance of pitfalls and misinformation. With the success and longevity of your website at stake, proper research prior to a good choice is critical. Hosting companies are forever vying for an edge over the competition to tempt potential customers with everything from increasingly lower monthly fees to special offers. Free cheese is only to be found on mousetraps and this analogy holds in good stead in the WordPress hosting market. In this article, we’re going to navigate you through some of the primary considerations in addition to giving you an oversight on five of the top services out there.

What Type of Hosting Service Do You Need?

Most decent hosting services can customise your package, tailoring it to your specific needs. However, broadly speaking, there are five different types of hosting of which to be aware.

Free Hosting Every now and then, you’ll come across free WordPress hosting services. As mentioned, and as with everything, services such as this always carry a catch. It’s not uncommon for people to try and cover the costs of their own WordPress hosting service by renting out a small part of their own server. You’ll have limited control of your service and it can go down at any time, leaving you with no idea what’s going. Downtime will cost you rankings in Google which may cost you money and potentially your reputation.

Shared WordPress Hosting

The primary benefits of shared web hosting services is that they’re cost-effective. This is the most popular type of WordPress hosting by a considerable margin and a good starting place for beginners to WordPress sites. Essentially, your WordPress website is hosted on a server shared with many other services. As your website traffic grows, it’s likely you’ll be politely asked to upgrade your account. If this happens, it’s worth doing so and hopefully the extra money received by then will cover the costs.

Virtual Private Server

A virtual private server (or VPS) consists of one physical computer is partitioned via software into several virtual machines. While you’re still sharing your physical server hardware with other users, you’ll see considerably more control over the back-end of your server as it appears as a dedicated one. You’ll be able to install more softwares more easily, idealt for the intermediate webmasters who usually use this option. If your technical knowledge of hosting is limited, a good option can be to opt for and managed version.

Managed Servers

For those happy to pay a little extra money or for those who are forced to do so due to a mild case of technophobia, managed servers represent an excellent choice. There’s very little to worry about as maintainance and upgrades are taken care of for you. Good hosting companies offering managed packages would take care of software updates, website back-ups, informing you of any plug-ins affecting the service and the negative fashion and usually much more.

Cloud Servers

Cloud servers are a relatively new technology and are continually increasing in popularity. The primary benefits of opting for a cloud server is that you never have to worry about your service going down and you can scale your package as your website traffic increases. For most web hosting services, this can be done by simple presses if a few control panel buttons to add extra nodes.

Dedicated Servers

A dedicated server is the choice of the professional Webmaster who either owns or administrates large, established websites. You have your own private machine and have control over everything from the operating system to the hardware installed. It’s worth considering a dedicated server only when your WordPress site has become more established and is generating both an appropriate amount of traffic and revenue. Likewise, it’s best to have an intermediate to advanced understanding of managing hosting services.

What Specifications are Needed?

One of the reasons WordPress is such a popular option is that the specifications required are universally available. Just about any hosting service will be amply capable of hosting your WordPress websites but, for the purposes of clarification, it must be compatible with the following two requirements:

PHP version 5.2.4 or greater

MySQL version 5.0 or greater

It would more difficult to find hosting service which did not meet the specifications for WordPress than it would be to find ones that did, so you shouldn’t have to worry about this side of things.

The Hosting Marketplace

Due to the competitive nature of this market space, hosters of WordPress websites pay significant sums of money to sign up technology bloggers as affiliates to recommend their services. Once this significant percentage of the profits is paid out, what’s left must be divided into the of hardware needed to produce high speeds for customers and to pay people’s wages to produce valuable customer support. These two latter factors should be a primary considerations of what makes a good service, so don’t be lulled in by a particularly low monthly fee.

The price-to-performance ratio for most server hardware usually improves at an exponential rate and so factors such as this are less of a problem. The potential pitfall here is that it’s difficult to tell these two important factors prior to having signed up for the service. All of the web hosting services we’ve chosen score highly in both customer support and speed. WordPress hosting is extremely affordable and the diversity of packages available is extensive on just about any service. For this reason, we’re going to take a look at the key benefits in what differentiates these services from the rest.

The Best WordPress Hosts at a Glance

1. Fat Cow
If this is your first time hosting your website then all the different interfaces and options can be quite intimidating. Fat Cow has put together a package and interface kept both colourfully interesting and user friendly. The cartoony style opted for here makes for a smoother transition into the world of web mastery for the uninitiated which might be more appealing to more creative types. This is simplified shared hosting at its best without the need for technical wizardry to get the job done.

2. West Host
West Host is a more complete hosting service which is still managable to novice webmasters with for small blogs or websites and relatively small traffic numbers. The vast majority of WordPress sites will not receive over 1,000 visitors a day and, if yours falls into this bracket, West Host provides a simple interface, rapid loading speeds, good flexibility in add-ons and software and exceptional customer care. The company is owned by UK2 Group who is in turn owned by Lloyd’s Investment Capital, a fact which means the money is there to set up a solid customer service centre. Furhtermore, you know it’s not about to drop out of existence any time soon.

3. VPS Net
VPS Net is a sister company of West Host and is primarily geared towards cloud-based hosting packages. With the same solid foundation in customer support, VPS Net is a great option for somebody who starts off small with West Host and then wants to transfer over to a scalable package the growing website. As that transfer is between sister companies, it will be incredibly smooth, free and won’t risk any downtime.

4. Just Host
Just Host has taken an excellent angle of approach to differentiate itself from the competition. This is another company geared towards shared hosting services and boasts a moneyback guarantee option at any time during your contract. In addition to offering customers the necessary website speed and excellent customer care, there is only ever one flat-rate price to pay for unlimited storage space, email and bandwidth. Anyone looking for a simple package for a basic or lite website or blog will have a smooth time with this company, especially if you know you can take advantage of the unlimited part of the package.

5. Synthesis
For those that feel a managed option would be the most pragmatic solution, we’re finishing up with a highly recommended managed option. Synthesis is a company created by Copy Blogging Media which means it was founded on an incredible wealth of experience. If you find yourself short time or inclination to keep on top of site maintenance, there’s no one better for the job. Synthesis was built by people with front-line experience anda better understanding of what WordPress publishers need then you’ll find anywhere else

Our Top Three Fonts Out Of Thirty Eight Great New Typefaces For 2013

Designing a usable, attractive typeface is truly one of the last great art forms. Unless you have tried to design a typeface of your own, it is hard to imagine the effort, creativity, and skill that is required to produce a unique, functional and original new typeface.

Interactive designer and typeface aficionado, Sean Mitchell, selected 38 wonderful new typefaces to highlight the new creations for the winter of 2013. From these, we have picked three of our favorites to share with you. To see all of the 38 amazing new typefaces, go to The Next Web and enjoy a feast for your eyes and senses.

First up is our personal favorite among the great 38. From the Font Bureau, we present Serge, designed by Cyrus Highsmith. Described as a “frisky, acrobatic face that dashes off decorative blurbs, signs, and headlines with a lively, angular zest,” this simple and attractive typeface just adds the right amount of zip to the printed page.

Our second choice is a sassy script from Art. Lebedev Studio: ALS SyysScript designed by Julia Sysm‰l‰inen. This easy to read modern font with a handwritten look is perfect for personalizing your important communications.

Our third favorite is the Borutta: Wood Type Collection from font designer Mateusz Machalski. This set of 7 font families designed to resemble wood block type is just what the doctor ordered when you are looking for something warm and different to spice up your website or brighten up a long email to distant relatives.

While we chose three special typefaces as our personal favorites, every single one of the 35 other typefaces are just as wonderful. Look them all over and pick your own favorites, then try your hand and design a typeface of your own.

It has been a very good year for Twitter in 2012 and as we wind down to the New Year, the company feels it is entitled to do a little celebrating.

Editorial Director Karen Wickre shared her happiness today on the Twitter Corporate Blog:

Every day, we’re amazed and humbled by the many ways in which people use Twitter, which range from simply retweeting to igniting conversations with hashtags (even around lesser-known topics) to sharing spectacular and far-flung views. Full Twitter story on mashable

During the year we saw many memorable tweets come and go on the Twitter website. Who can forget Green Bay Packers guard TJ Lang’s obscene tweet after a game full of questionable calls by replacement referees filling in for striking NFL referees. The bad calls that ruined a good football game and Lang certainly shared his feelings with the Twitterverse:

Although it was later deleted, the angry football lineman made his opinion known:

F@%* it NFL.. Fine me and use the money to pay the regular refs. Full Twitter story on mashable

Twitter users are not likely to ever forget astronaut Sunita Williams tweet as she watched Hurricane Sandy tear into the Eastern United States from her perch in outer space:

Hope everyone is doing ok with the storm. Saw #Sandy on our flight path yesterday. From our vantage point #ISS twitpic.com/b8t6fg

— Sunita Williams (@Astro_Suni) October 30, 2012

During 2012, Twitter users covered a wide range of trending, popular topics including the Olympics, the U.S. presidential election, the Euro Cup, super-storm Sandy, the MTV Video Music Awards, the death of singer Whitney Houston, and the success of Korean K Music star PSY.

When people have something to say, in 140 characters or less, they depend on Twitter to shout out to the world. Now we wonder what will be the first big tweet of 2013.

Facebook Asks Users To Vote On The Social Media Giant’s Rules Of Governance

Facebook users are being asked to voice their opinions about the rules and regulations used to govern the social media giant. From now until December 10, 2012, the one billion plus users will be asked to vote on how Facebook handles their data and the privacy of their information.

Users will also be asked to vote on whether or not Facebook should abolish the policy to allow users to vote on future policy changes. If it sounds like a bit of double talk it is, because it is essential that users always be allowed to have a voice in the policies of social media websites, especially when it comes to their privacy and how personal information is handled.

Facebook’s Vice President of Public Policy and Marketing, Elliot Schrage, addressed the major areas of concern.

Ownership of your content. A number of the comments suggested that we were changing ownership of your content on Facebook. We’re not. This is not true and has never been the case. Anyone who uses Facebook owns and controls the content and information they post, as stated in our SRR. They control how that content and information is shared. That is our policy, and it always has been. We’re not proposing to change this key aspect of how Facebook works.

Privacy controls. In our latest set of updates, we proposed to add language reminding you of the difference between privacy settings (which let you decide who can see what you post anywhere on Facebook) and timeline visibility preferences (which impact how things show up on your timeline but don’t impact other parts of Facebook, like news feed, relationship pages, or search results). Some people asked if this means we’re removing controls you currently have over who can see the things you post. We are not. We simply added this language to further explain how these privacy settings and timeline preferences work. In response to your feedback, however, we’re adding additional language to remind you that you can delete things you post or change the audience at any time.

Advertising policies. We’ve always been clear that we are able to provide free services by showing you ads that are relevant to your interests, and we use your posts – including pages you like – to help show these ads. We proposed new language to make it clearer that those likes and posts include topics like religion or political views. This language does not mean that we are changing our Advertising Guidelines, which prohibit advertisers from running ads that assert or imply sensitive personal characteristics, such as race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation. We’ve added additional language, including a link to our guidelines, to this proposal to make that clearer. Read the full article on Facebook’s new privacy rules here
.

Many Facebook users are unhappy with the proposed policy changes and they are joined in their concerns by privacy advocates. Many feel that CEO Mark Zuckerberg has become increasingly out of touch and arrogant. They are afraid the company has grown so large they have lost touch with the common purpose that attracted everyone to Facebook in the first place.

Zuckerberg and his management team argue that Facebook is now an enormous publicly traded company and they are beset with a massive amount of regulations and rules as is any major company listed on the stock exchange. The company claims the sheer size of Facebook and the lack of interest by users in previous policy votes makes the whole process obsolete.

No matter the excuse, Facebook still needs to listen to users and respect their privacy first and foremost. If Zuckerberg and his associates choose to ignore their users and violate their privacy, there will be hell to pay on the World Wide Web.

Sadly, Facebook announced it would take at least 30% or 300 million users to respond to the vote for the company to continue its policy of allowing users to shape the rules. It looks like it is a done deal and user participation in the governance of Facebook is nearing an end. Expect to hear from some rather unhappy users and privacy advocates after the announcement is official and the user vote is a thing of the past.

Twitter has always been about getting the most from 140 characters…

…but now the company has big plans to improve the popular social network. Twitter announced several new features that will be addedover the next several weeks.

New design. The site has a cleaner timeline and a rich details pane that instantly adds more impact to individual Tweets while still maintaining the simplicity of the timeline. And, experience infinite scroll — you no longer have to click more to view additional Tweets.

Media. Now, it’s easy to see embedded photos and videos directly on Twitter, thanks to partnerships with DailyBooth, deviantART, Etsy, Flickr, Justin.TV, Kickstarter, Kiva, Photozou, Plixi, Twitgoo, TwitPic, TwitVid, USTREAM, Vimeo, yfrog, and YouTube.

Related content. When you click a Tweet, the details pane shows additional information related to the author or subject. Depending on the Tweet’s content, you may see: replies, other Tweets by that user, a map of where a geotagged Tweet was sent from, and more.

Mini profiles. Click a username to see a mini profile without navigating from the page, which provides quick access to account information, including bio and recent Tweets. Full story here…

The appropriately named #NewTwitter client is almost ready to go and users should pleased when they begin to use it. Twitter is placing particular emphasis on the hashtag now being labeled as Discover; by taking the discovery concept to a whole new level.

To say that video marketing is in flux is an understatement.

About two years ago if you wanted to rank a video on page one of google your videos had to be hosted on your site, (or a third party site like amazon s3) with the correct schema in place. Then a coder would have to put together an intricate site map and hope google would index your video and rank it.

You would also need to indicate how long the video was in seconds, the format, the date and a few others things like tags and descriptions. It’s not that Google was making it hard, it was just so new they didn’t have the right system in place to help identify these videos. That has totally changed.

“The Current State Of Video Marketing”

Now you can simply upload a video to Youtube, embed that code on your site and the video will appear in google and show the page on your site the video is on in google. This is huge.

Google are putting so much weight on videos that they are making it as easy as possible to get your videos ranked, indexed and viewed by people coming your site. It’s no doubt that google are taking this approach and giving videos so much love when you look at metrics from sites like Comscore you soon begin to understand how important it is to fit video marketing into your overall strategy.

What are the benefits of Having a video appear in search?

Higher CTR (click through rate)

More authority

Lower bounce rate – because it’s a video people will tend to watch and stay on your site longer, increasing time spent of time while lowering bounce rate.

Increase conversions

Increase customer interaction.

By having a video on your site, you can direct your searchers to a video answering the question your user has come to your site to get answered, this would immediately help build rapport and help you direct them through your sales funnel , increasing time spent on site, search engine positioning and conversions.

There are many different elements to getting your videos ranked, especially for competitive keywords. The brief outline we covered here will help you rank videos for your company name, and other low to medium competitive keywords.

With Google changing the rules so often (because they are constantly trying new things and ways to make media more accessible to its users) it can be hard to stay up to date with the latest changes. Please subscribe to our blog where you can stay up to date with all the latest news.

If your site has a national or global reach you may need to consider syndicating your video through the appropriate mediums. Noam Design can help you with that, please send a project request and we’ll get back to you within a few hours with a custom plan.
