Ukrainian Festival This Weekend
Hi Everyone!
In case any of you is interested in ethnic festivals, the Ukrainian festival is happening this weekend May 15-17, 2009 on 7th Street between 2nd and 3rd Ave. I make an effort to go every year, and it’s been getting smaller and smaller as the Ukrainian immigrants leave for other neighborhoods or die form old age (the east village has steadily lost its ethnic character over the past 20 years to gentrification). I don’t see this festival continuing for another 5 years, so see it while you can!
And as a extra perk, McSorley’s is on the same street (across from the church).
The professional dance troupes that perform at the festival are pretty good, but they have younger school children perform as well (while they suck they look cute in the costumes). I highly recommend the
hand-made pierogies sold at the festival, food of the gods if you can withstand the cholesterol.
