Bad Ideas Unleash Creativity

Make the jumpWhen brainstorming in a group, people are often afraid to express their take on something because they’re feeling insecure that maybe their idea is not so good. They’re afraid to look bad and that people will think their input is plain useless. So they refrain from “making the jump”.

The thing is that bad ideas are great for unleashing your creative juice! When people are not afraid to look stupid and just bring everything that comes to mind it opens up new channels and helps you think in new and creative ways.

In addition, a lot of people have really good critical thinking – they think best when they hear something stupid. So having lots of bad ideas around will trigger the critical part of your brain and that will help you come up with awesome ideas and new ways to solve a problem.

If you’re hosting a brainstorming session, try to create a context where people feel free to say whatever comes to mind. Make people feel that any input is valuable. Unleash creativity and out-of-the-box thinking by removing social barriers and creating an atmosphere where participants will feel involved and valuable.  Make them feel like their input will make a difference.

One of the ways to achieve that is to separate the decision making process with the brainstorming process. Brainstorming should only be brainstorming – no decision will be taken and thus nobody will judge your input. Nobody will say your idea is good or bad at this stage. And that will help unleash creativity.

You want creativity? Make the jump! Express all your bad ideas.
