Cross Browser Compatibility Tips

Cross BrowserI thought I knew a great deal about CSS and website design until I began doing cross browser debugging. Website developers know all too well that cross browser problems can turn into a front-end nightmare. If you fix one problem, you may often break something else in another browser. Designing a website to behave in outdated browsers (particularly Ie6) requires a lot of problem solving. Even after a great deal of practice, it is very difficult to design a website to display perfectly in all browsers. Here are some tools I find myself using most to test, and fix, some common problems: (more…)

50 is the new 20

Fab50 logoMy current web design project “Fabulous Over Fifty” – a community website – really makes me want to turn 50 before the website goes live!

The media focuses too much on the younger generation these days, portraying anyone born before 1970 as archaic, unwelcoming of the internet, wireless communication and social networking. But the reality is that many women 50 and over enjoy vibrant lives, their enthusiasm for the fine things in life is paired with wisdom and refinement- and these ladies are web savvy too! So watch out, Myspace, Fab/50 is coming! (more…)

Web Design Gallery Link Update

Web Design GalleryHi Folks,

We relocated our Web Design Gallery (formerly at www.noamdesign.net) so be sure to update your links. We have a permanent redirect set up just in case you don’t :-) . We’re also working to make the Web Design Gallery faster (the automatic thumbnail generating script is running a bit too slow for our taste).

You may still submit your favorite web design to showcase your own web design, improve your SEO or direct attention to a web design that you truly admire. While we’re fine-tuning the website, it is still functional and you are welcome to use it.

A New Web Design Gallery

Web Design GalleryOur web design company has done it again! We’re pleased to announce the launch of a new project: The Web Design Gallery

When you’re in the web design business, you run across many impressive sites built by talented web designers. Naturally, it was only a matter of time before we started a web design gallery collection of our own. Many websites were already added, feel free to do the same to show case your web design work and submit your favorite web design! While you browse through the web design gallery, you may vote and comment on any of the designs listed. When voting, please keep the web design category in mind. Depending on the website’s purpose the design rules are very different. For example: an E-commerce site might not be the most artful, but the quality of the user interface and clear visual communication would make it a superior website in its own niche. A personal portfolio site would have different web design criteria. (more…)

Web Design For The Common Man: When An Ordinary CMS Won’t Do

Website CMSAs web design clients become accustomed to web 2.0 design, they demand more user-friendly control over the website’s content, but to the developer such a request can be a programming nightmare. While some look to WordPress, Drupal, or Joomla as a remedy, these options are wholly insufficient if the customer requires a complex website with Flash, Javascript and Ajax or wants the option to change graphical elements within the template itself. How To Write Web Content

Writing web contentI have a website, now what?

I. Content

What is “content”?

Content is all the text, images, videos and sound files in your website. “Rich content” pertains to content which has a lot of visual and interactive elements aimed keeping your visitors entertained.

I’ve never written web content before, how do I get started?

If your website is for a company, and not a personal website, you will need to think about your target audience.

Dry for ideas? Look at other company’s websites related to your industry for inspiration. Make note of any websites you’d consider well-executed and study them. What makes their content so good? (more…)

Ukrainian Festival This Weekend

ukrainian festivalHi Everyone!

In case any of you is interested in ethnic festivals, the Ukrainian festival is happening this weekend May 15-17, 2009 on 7th Street between 2nd and 3rd Ave. I make an effort to go every year, and it’s been getting smaller and smaller as the Ukrainian immigrants leave for other neighborhoods or die form old age (the east village has steadily lost its ethnic character over the past 20 years to gentrification). I don’t see this festival continuing for another 5 years, so see it while you can!

And as a extra perk, McSorley’s is on the same street (across from the church). (more…)

Designers Community Website

cgsocietyCGsocietyis one of my favorite sites for digital art is. There’s lots of professional CG artists who show off their work on this site (portfolio section), and the forum (CGTalk- which is free and doesn’t require membership to use) hosts friendly competitions for matte painting (photoshop), 3D modeling, lighting & texturing, and rigging. There are helpful topics for the major graphics applications (photoshop, after effects, autoCAD, 3dmax, maya, zbrush, mudbox,etc..). The site also offers advanced on-line courses (for a fee). Anyone interested in computer graphics will love this site, and those interested in learning new techniques will find a wealth of information on the forums.

I’m trying to get a NY CGsociety chapter formed, but it doesn’t look like there’s enough people (most CGSociety members are in Australia).

cheers!
